Unesco has offered to publish 32 this work as one of its se ries of " Unesco Bibliographical Manuals, " and the Executive Board agreed to this in April 1967. (3) Guide to eollections oj Asian and Paeifie manuseripts in libraries oj Europe and North Ameriea, compiled by J. D. Pearson. The work compiled und er contract has been approved by Unesco. Following expert comments from IFLA certain additions will be made, and it will be published by a commercial publisher.

Some volumes of original prints of Pirancsi, of Rubcns, of Della Bella and others have been rescued. Also the Biblioteca Comunale was fiooded, and 650 binders of manuscripts from 1794 to 1814, various periodicals and books were damaged. 5,000 volumes of the Library of the " Societa Leonardo Da Vinci " were severely damaged. Also the Library of the Jewish Community of Florence suffered damages to its 15,000 volumes, nearly all old and valuable, amongst which 93 rolls ofthe Pentateuch, manuscripts on parchment from the XV century onwards, 200 paper manuscripts, 9 manuscript rolls and some precious printed editions.

Also the Library of the Kunsthistorisches Institut suffered damage to periodicals and to the collection of catalogues of art exhibitions. 2,000 volumes have been sent to be restored. We can only hope that the work of rebuilding and restoring the wealth to the Libraries of Florence will not be interrupted by any adverse conditions. May the answer to this tragic challenge remain like a beacon to future generations and leave a comforting sign of human solidarity and be a tangible monument to culture, which has no frontiers.
